Scott, WI – 3 Teens Injured in Buggy Crash at Co. Trunk Hwy SS & Vaughn Rd

Scott, WI (October 17, 2025) – Three teenagers were injured on October 15 in a crash involving an Amish buggy and a box truck in the Town of Scott, according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of County Trunk Highway SS and Vaughn Road. Emergency crews arrived shortly after a 911 call was placed and began providing medical aid at the scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, the buggy was traveling eastbound when it failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled into the path of a northbound box truck. The truck struck the buggy, causing injuries to the teens inside.

All three teenagers were transported by EMS to UW Children’s Hospital for treatment. Authorities stated the injuries were not life-threatening, and the teens are expected to make a full recovery.

The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators. The horse pulling the buggy was not injured. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash and its contributing factors.

We wish the injured teens a full and speedy recovery.

Buggy and Commercial Vehicle Accidents in Rural Wisconsin

Crashes involving horse-drawn buggies and commercial vehicles, like box trucks, can result in serious injuries—especially in rural areas like Columbia County. These areas often have a mix of slower-moving buggies and faster, heavier vehicles sharing the same roads, which increases the risk of dangerous collisions.

Wisconsin is home to many Amish and Mennonite communities that rely on buggies for daily travel. At the same time, highways and county roads see regular use by commercial vehicles delivering goods. Unfortunately, when these two forms of transportation collide, the occupants of the buggy—often unprotected—are at a much greater risk of injury.

Box trucks and other large vehicles can cause severe damage even at lower speeds. Their limited stopping ability and larger blind spots make it harder for drivers to avoid unexpected obstacles, such as buggies entering the roadway. On the other hand, buggy drivers may have limited visibility or slower reaction times, especially at intersections.

In accidents like the one reported in the Town of Scott, multiple parties may be involved, and determining fault can be complex. Even when one party appears to be at fault, victims may still be entitled to compensation. Medical expenses, long-term care, lost income, and pain and suffering can all be addressed through a legal claim.
